Position size calculator

Decide how much of your balance you accept to lose, and get the lot size that fits the stop loss you place.

Position size (lots)…
Amount at risk…

An estimate before spread and swap.

How is position size calculated?

Position size = amount at risk ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per lot), where the amount at risk = balance × risk percentage.

Many traders risk 1% to 2% of their balance per trade, so a run of losses does not wipe out the account.

A worked example

A 2,000 USD balance at 1% risk means 20 USD. With a 25-pip stop on EURUSD, where a pip is 10 USD per lot: 20 ÷ (25 × 10) = 0.08 lots.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the position size rounded down?
Because the smallest volume step is 0.01 lots, and rounding down keeps your loss within the share you chose.
Is a stop loss enough on its own?
The stop loss decides where you exit and the position size decides how much you lose there. Together they are risk management.
What if the result is below 0.01 lots?
The stop is too far for your balance or the risk is too small: move the stop closer, raise the risk carefully, or practise on the demo account first.
